About this deal

I didn't get attached to any of the characters. I probably might even forget all about them by next week but I still found the characters to be very well thought out and written about. Especially the relationship between Laura & Will, Will & Elsa, and Laura and her mother were heartwarming, good models that let me sink slowly into the story. Seventy years later, social worker Laura is battling her way out of depression and off medication. Her new case is a strange, isolated old man whose house hasn’t changed since the war. A man who insists his fiancé vanished many, many years before. Everyone thinks he’s suffering dementia. But Laura begins to suspect otherwise . . . A fascinating, beautiful, heartwarming novel. It kept me gripped from the very first chapter’— BETH O’LEARY Now 87 years of age Will’s health and safety, given Avon Lodge is now more or less a death trap, is the prime concern of social services. Laura James, working for Regency Home care agency is tasked with assessing Will’s suitability to remain at home and it is thanks to her appearance in his life and her belief in him that he can finally reconcile the past. Hints of her own troubled upbringing coupled with her ability to listen to the ramblings of an elderly man suggest Laura is well placed to help decide Will’s future.

Review: The Frequency of Us - The Jewish Chronicle Review: The Frequency of Us - The Jewish Chronicle

I also found evidence of the bombings– buildings with great chunks blasted out of them, areas of pavement scorched pink by fires, and of course, great sections of the city flattened by the bombs and then rebuilt in the 1960s. These little details were crucial to capturing the terror of those two nights when Bath was targeted by German bombing planes. I spent days wandering about to find the perfect place for Will’s home, which is where most of the story takes place, and eventually found it on Lansdown Road, the long winding, steep lane leading out of Bath toward the racecourse. It has excellent views of the city and is close to an area of intense bombing (Julian Road, just behind the Assembly Rooms) so it’s a historically plausible place for him to have lived, and to have been directly affected by a blast. The WWII time period continues to amaze me and i recently watched a few episodes of a show called “Traitors” and so you book review fits in nicely with that. I am not a huge set-up person. I couldn't care less for descriptions of places, monuments, etc. My brain generally just casually skips over any such descriptions, be it about people, places, architecture, or weather. I cannot be bothered to read it with any interest. So I cannot judge the set-up accurately in this case, but whatever was there in the book worked for me and was not overdone.

Division of General Medicine, Department of Medicine, University of Texas at Houston, Memorial Hermann Center for Healthcare Quality and Safety, University of Texas Medical School at Houston, Houston, Texas, USA The colon cancer study estimated errors in CRC diagnosis in 26 out of 291 773 patients seen in outpatient care (0.009%). Extrapolating to the US adult population that seeks outpatient care, we estimated 0.007% of all adults would have errors related to CRC per year. In the lung cancer study, we found 127 errors in 587 cases of lung cancer, yielding a 21.64% error rate. Extrapolating to the 80.5% of the US adult population that seeks outpatient care and the 0.072% of the population that becomes newly diagnosed with lung cancer each year, 16 we estimate 0.013% of all adults would have errors related to lung cancer per year. Laura is taken on as a favour to her mum, as a carer in a private firm. It is her job to asses 87 year old Will and decide whether he is safe to be living in his house, or whether he should be taken into a care home. I want to believe it’s possible,’ I say. ‘A love affair so brilliant and beautiful that nothing dims it, not even after sixty years. I’d like to know such a thing exists.’ Initially it took me long to actually get into the plot but later on I just loved it. The dual timeline is what got me hooked into because I was constantly trying to guess how is it all going to tie up at the end.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a gentle mystery with a little romance, and a touch of history.

The Frequency of Us’ unfolds through a series of alternating first-person narratives of war-time Will and modern-day Laura. These are interspersed with the occasional voice of other characters which reinforce the story, all created with Keith Stuart’s natural flair. This was a book that I didn’t want to put down. The story is told in the present and the past, between 1938 and 1942, leading up to the bombing of Bath, where Will lives. The plot has you second-guessing everything you think you know. One minute you are convinced Elsa was real, the next you are not so sure, could this be all in Will’s head who suffered a breakdown and PTSD after the bombing? Conclusions Our population-based estimate suggests that diagnostic errors affect at least 1 in 20 US adults. This foundational evidence should encourage policymakers, healthcare organisations and researchers to start measuring and reducing diagnostic errors. Laura has some mental health issues brought on by issues with her father when she was a child. She suffers from depression and anxiety and is grateful to be given the job to assess Will, though she finds him a little scary and hard work at first.
