About this deal

Rundell drops small hints that Ilya might be gay; so small, in fact, that I initially thought I was imagining things. For example, Ilya always seems to turn beet red in Alexei's presence, and manifests a strong desire to impress the older boy. Nothing worth anything,” said one soldier. His eyes moved across her reindeer-skin bedspread and the hurricane lamp and came to rest on her skis, leaning against the fireplace. Feo ran to stand protectively in front of them. My first book of the year was Katherine Rundell's Rooftoppers, which I absolutely adored - it was magical and utterly charming, and it made me want to try more of her books. So, I put The Wolf Wilder on my list, and this has ended up being the book with which I completed my 2016 Goodreads reading challenge (my goal was 52 books)! This was one of the best books I have ever read. I thought that the general idea it was based around was unusual which made the book extremely interesting.

And your daughter is vermin when she is with those wolves. I’ve heard stories about you both—you’re unfit to be a mother.” Wait!” said Marina. She stood in the doorway. There was a bruise on her cheek that had not been there before. “Can’t you see this is my daughter’s room?” The most exciting new children's novel for a decade ... [Rundell] is a master storyteller in the Philip Pullman category -- Amanda Craig The Independent It took Feo ten minutes to ski to the ruins of the stone chapel. At the entrance hall were three dilapidated statues of saints: They had no heads, and two of them had grown a scaly skin of green lichen. Even without heads, the saints managed to look unimpressed by this state of affairs. Only two and a half of the chapel walls were still standing, and the roof had long ago crumbled onto the mosaic floor below. There were pews, half eaten away by woodworm, and a marble miniature of the Virgin, which Feo had cleaned with the chewed end of a twig. If the light was right in the chapel, and if you looked closely, you could see that the walls had once been painted with gold figures. It was, Feo thought, the most beautiful place on earth. No, lapushka!” Marina’s arm, with its embroidery of scars and muscle, enwrapped Feo. “Of course not. But we’ll be a little more silent, and a little more watchful.” She rattled the chestnuts roasting in the grate, and flipped one into Feo’s hands. “It’s what the wolves do. We can do it too. Can’t we?”

The Wolf Wilder is Katherine Rundell's best book yet - precise, magical and wise - it's a story that will stay with you for a long time after you've read it. I absolutely loved it Sarah Crossan Read it: During the next snow storm; from the bottom of a dog pile; to your kids, no matter their age. In this world, St. Petersburg aristocrats keep wolves as status-symbol house pets. But wolves can only be tamed to a point. The wolves are overfed and indulged until the day they rebel against their capricious masters and revert to their -- well, wolfish -- instincts. This is where Feo and her fierce mother Marina come in. They teach the wolves to be wild again; they return them to their rightful home and proud, fierce natures. While the adults in this world are terrified of harsh retribution -- with the exception of Marina, who has been jailed for her defiance -- the children are still wild and bold enough enough to fight against unfairness. Yes, the children show the adults the way . . . a time-honoured theme in children's literature. This book makes me feel ten years old again. Every time I read a Katherine Rundell book I wonder why I ever spend time reading anything else. Her writing style is so unique and stunning I could probably recognise it from one sentence. Every word is a treasure, and her concepts are so original and different reading her books is like a breath of fresh air.

Fairy tale and history merge seamlessly” ( Publishers Weekly, starred review) in this enchanting and lyrical novel about love and resilience from the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award winner, Katherine Rundell. In Rakov, it’s clear that the Romanovs weren’t doing a good job running the country. Corruption was everywhere, and the common folk were suffering. In Alexei, the hope of the revolution is visible. It’s no wonder Lenin seemed like a hero when he spoke of something different for Russia. It’s really well done. I’d also not read much set in this era that wasn’t about the Romanovs themselves or high society, so The Wolf Wilder really does some wonderful and original stuff. No. No, neither of those things is true,” said Feo’s mother. “Other people send the wolves when they tire of them: the aristocrats, the rich. We untame them, that’s all. And wolves cannot be owned.” I could understand all the characters emotions, for one thing, and I could picture every character in my head (the marvellous illustrations helped with that though). I really likes the book: very mesmerising and eventful. The story line was unlike any other and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. The true love and passion towards the wolves are clearly marked out and many others can relate on having that same feeling. The characters were well thought out: my favourite character in particular was Marina (Feo's mother) although she wasn't one of the main characters- I could sense she was brave, loving, intelligent and proud which gave me a real insight to her body features and what she perhaps did in the meantime when she wasn't included in the story. She was an inspiration to me. General Rakov made my blood boil and the way Katherine Rundell written him as a character (to make me despise him that much) was incredible. The other characters were superb too. Make a zig zag book with the different characters in the story. Write a line or two about each character. Make a weather chart
