There’s a bit of a James Bond vibe in the film’s globe-trotting settings and some of its set-pieces, particularly the speed boat chase. The next official Police Story sequel, First Strike, would take this style much further though. In the booklet, James Oliver spends much of his essay discussing the difference between the US and HK cuts of the film, not necessarily in on-screen detail, but in terms of the politics taken out, which makes for interesting reading. Shout-Out: The scene where Chaibat bashes a subordinate's head with a durian (an exotic Malaysian fruit, covered in spikes) is a reference to Al Capone's iconic baseball bat scene from The Untouchables. While New Police Story and Police Story 2013 are part of the Police Story film series, they are not continuations of the original series and are considered reboots was notable for its conceit of naming each episode "Who Killed. . .?", with that ellipsis being filled by that week's victim. It also arguably attracted Sequel Goes Foreign: The previous Police Story films were both squarely rooted in Hong Kong, but Supercop takes the action to Mainland China, Thailand, and Malaysia. Each disc in the set comes with two excellent audio commentaries from some familiar names like Frank Djeng, who is always enjoyable to listen and filled with knowledge on these films, as well as Arne Venema and Mike Leeder who have a great, casual banter together that make them very listenable. Additionally, there are multiple cuts of the films, from export cuts to original Hong Kong Cuts and more (the alternate cuts are all in HD). So, Eureka has come through once again with a must-have collectible set for these classics.about its show is its fantastic theme song, kind of ironically written by a guy with Burke in his very name, Herschel (Burke) Gilbert. Dimension Films released Supercop in the US in 1996 with some edits to the film, the complete replacement of all music and sound effects, and English dubbing. Most fans will be wondering just where you go from the 2018 4K remastered Blu-rays that Eureka released, because they were - at least at the time - comfortably the definitive way to watch the first two movies, bringing them to our screens (and to the correct aspect ratio) in stunning style, afforded a revitalisation that, whilst hardly concealing the minimalist budget of these movies, still gave them a new lease of life. For many, it was like watching them for the first time, a transformation from full-screen, soft, possibly wrong cuts to give us the Police Story movies like never seen before. I’m ashamed to admit that, despite being a self-professed fan of martial arts movies, I’ve never seen Police Story 3: Supercop. For a long time, I believed I owned it on DVD, but when I finally got around to watching the disc I realised I’d been duped by a dodgy distributor who’d labelled the inferior Supercop 2 as simply Supercop. If you have the standard box set of the first two films, you may want to plump for the standalone release of the third film to compliment your collection. Even so, the UHD Trilogy box set is far superior if you have a 4K screen, and there are one or two extra features that aren’t on the 1080p releases.
