About this deal

Erecting: given the condensation issue I was never able to leave it all attached together so putting it up was a bit of a faff compared to other lightweight tents. I also concluded I prefer a semi or fully self standing design. WeatherTec™+ is the Coleman assessment of how 'weather proof' we gauge our tents and shelters. There are many factors which influence the performance of tent in tough weather conditions. Coleman use the latest technology and a rigorous testing regime to ensure that we keep you protected at all times - whatever the weather. The tent isn’t warm per se and is more suited to 3-season camping. It can be used in frosty and even snowy conditions, gathered the user has all appropriate cold-weather gear such as a down sleeping bag, insulated sleeping mat, foil ground layer, hat, gloves, and thermals. But the tent shouldn’t be relied upon in isolation to keep you warm during a night’s camping in sub-zero temperatures.

As mentioned, the Coleman Cobra 2 has low clearance and can be pitched among trees. The floor space is not as narrow as some tents, and an outdoor area of 2.2 m² is recommended by Coleman to pitch the tent on – although less than this will do in emergencies as I often found out! This means to fully stretch out the tent and to make the most of its waterproofing and wind-resistant abilities, it needs to be pitched on a spacious area of land. This is somewhat limiting if there is a lot of vegetation, trees, or uneven ground in the intended camping area. Cleaning the Cobra 2 The only down side I have is that when the outer tent is clipped on to the poles the zip is way to tight to use so I unclip the side I will be using from the poles. The stated weight on the Cobra is 2.05 kg, but when I weighed mine it came in at closer to 2.2 kg. Definitely within the margin of error that I’ve come to expect with tent weights. The Coleman Cobra 2 man tent, pitched Pitch It is a fly-first pitch which is useful as it prevents the inner module from being exposed if you’re in bad weather. The inner module comes pre-attached to the outer canvas. So, you can unroll the tent and pitch it in one, with the inside of the tent never being exposed to the elements. It can be easily set up by a single person.Only when the tent began to reach +6 weeks of full-on wilderness use did the floor begin to lose some of its waterproofing ability. Bearing in mind that I never use a groundsheet, this is pretty good going. Bring this review up to the present, the canvas of the tent is still as waterproof as ever and not one tent peg has been bent or guy rope broken. Storage When Walking The Coleman Cobra is one of the cheapest lightweight tents on the market. Cheaper even than many of the good value tents to be found on Ali Express – although, in fairness, those tents tend to come in at a much lower weight. Which brings us nicely on to that… One thing to note about the aluminium poles on the Cobra: they need to bend a bit more than feels comfortable. A few times, I swore I was going to bust the poles trying to make them fit. But they do just keep on bending! I haven’t managed to break them yet. Space & Storage If you keep the groundsheet low to the floor, this tent can be pitched in challenging conditions. In good weather, it can be erected in under 5 minutes. In high winds, a bit more care may be needed but it’s still perfectly possible to do alone.

A small gripe is that there isn’t much room to sit up or move about. Sometimes, even when the tent is taut as can be, the interior sides are loose and can flop inwards with no way of stretching the inner layer out any further. This doesn’t cause it to flap, as the outer canvas stops the wind, but it can be a little irritating. On either side of the tent, there are gaps between the interior module and the outer canvas. If the inner module is full, this requires you to place some of your gear out on the grass where it’s a little exposed. Entrance: don't really like- 2 entrances was fine but I found it a bit awkward to get into, sort of low and at a bit of an angle and having to wiggle through the porch section- maybe I'm getting old but I'd look for a different design in future. The polyester fabric welcomes lightness without compromising on performance! PU coated and boasting taped seams the Cobra features a 3000mm Hydrostatic Head rating. The Cobra 2 is shaped like a structured wedge which provides good resistance when pitched head-on into the prevailing wind. It is squat and can be pitched close to the ground reducing the effect of adverse weather conditions. If you have used this product please leave a review, or your comments for other visitors, many thanks! As weight is not an issue for me, I've ditched the strange lightweight pegs that it came with as I as somehow cut myself the first time I tried them and have replaced with normal pins. When sitting up, the head height of the tent is 87 cm. I haven’t ever found this to be an issue (I’m bang-on 6 feet tall) – in fact I think you’d have to be pretty damn tall to be headbutting the canvas in this thing. I think it’s this first-timer market that the Cobra still serves best. Seasoned ultralight campers will no doubt squirm at the thought of a 2kg tent. But the fact is that the Cobra is a totally solid and reliable performer for the budget-conscious camper.

Coleman Cobra 2 Man Tent Review - Thrifty Hiker Coleman Cobra 2 Man Tent Review - Thrifty Hiker

It had rained non-stop for the last three days. A storm was sweeping west off the North Sea and battering against northern England. I was about halfway through my week-long hike along the Hadrian’s Wall Path – an ancient wall built by the Romans 1,900 years ago. I was camped on an exposed ridge in Northumberland National Park. The Coleman Cobra is a fly-first pitch. This is useful as it helps prevent the inner tent from being exposed if you’re in bad weather. The inner tent will come pre-attached to the outer fly. Assuming you never detach it yourself, this means you can always ‘unroll and pitch’ it, with the inside of the tent never being exposed to the elements. With every gust of wind, rain hammered into my tent and rattled my tent poles. I pulled my sleeping bag tighter to cover my chin and listened to the sound of the storm passing over. I was warm inside my sleeping bag, and the interior of my tent was mercifully dry. I kept expecting water to leak through in the night, but it never did. If any tent was to go through a rigorous in-field test, the Coleman Cobra 2 had passed with flying colours. I have started cycle touring and wanted a tent I could get all my kit (4 large panniers, Handle bar bag and extra top bag) in to as well as a single airbed. The double side entries are very useful - we tend to use one porch as a store and one as a doorway. Having both sides with zip entries on the 3 person version is best. The 2 person version only has one zipped side, which is a bit of a pain. However, as a tall man, I appreciate the way this tent design makes full use of its length. And if going ‘ultralight’ isn’t even your aim, then I’d even say that the Coleman Cobra is one of the best value tents on the market still. There’s a reason this tent has been around for so long and that the design has barely changed: it just works. Coleman Cobra: The Verdict The Cobra 2 has dual vestibules – the inner compartment has a zippable door flap on both sides. However there is only one exterior door flap which can be irritating if camping with two people and someone has to climb over the other person to get out. The Coleman Cobra comes in a 2 man and a 3 man version. Both versions are double skinned, with the only real difference being the width of the tent. There’s a bathtub floor, mosquito netting, and two vestibules – but only a single entrance. This means that you can only access the second vestibule from inside the tent.

The tent capacity is 2 persons, but as usual, 1 person fits plenty. There is also a 3-person option available which has more floor space. Condensation: we had a lot of condensation inside the fly every morning. Maybe I'm not used to travelling with 3 or didn't vent it right but it was a real pain have to separate the fly carefully every time from the inner and spend a while airing and drying it. We used it in a cool August in brittany. The Coleman Cobra 3 is a lightweight tent that offers superb value for a budding adventurist; the wedged tunnel design is wind responsive and strong.

I like the ability to enter from both sides and the extra storage at the side of the door on both sides (leave the smelly shoes out there)
