About this deal

The neodymium magnetic attachment is exceptionally strong, too, so your dash cam should never detach from the windscreen and none of the footage we captured is shaky. The magnetic mount attachment also makes clipping the dash cam onto the mount much less fiddly than before. On the dash cam's screen you'll see a menu of 3 options. Please select 'Mass Storage' on the Dash Cam screen and then OK so that only that displays on the screen. The mount includes a mini-USB connector that you can attach to the long car power cable. Unfortunately, this has a non-removable car cigarette light adapter at the other end, so you won’t easily be able to hook up the 512GW and a satnav to automotive power – unless your car has a USB connection and the satnav can make use of this. Nextbase dash cams are readily available from Halfords and are allegedly endorsed by the AA, so it’s no surprise that the specification and build make for a promising start. The sensor inside is a Sony Exmor R unit, although there’s no indication of the size or resolution. There are at least sufficient pixels for 1440p recording (2560 x 1440) at 30fps. Alternatively, it’s possible to record Full HD (1920 x 1080) at 60fps. You can also choose Full HD and 720p at 30fps. At the top resolution, video is captured at 27Mbits/sec, so a 16GB memory card will be enough for 77 minutes of footage before the recoding loops to replace the oldest files with new ones. As usual, there’s microSD for storage, but none is supplied in the box – which is a shame for a dash cam that is well out of the budget territory.

The image quality of the 512GW is good in all kinds of different conditions including bright sunlight, rain and darkness. It’s easy to make out details like signs, the makes and models of cars, along with number plates. The field of view is 140 degrees, which is wide enough to capture a broad area ahead of the car.Increasingly, motorists are using footage to prove that they weren’t at fault during incidents so visual quality is a vital component of the purchasing decision. Insurers are also recognising this now, with 29 of the UK’s major insurers now accepting in car camera dash cam footage as part of an insurance claim. Furthermore, there are immediate financial benefits for motorists using a dash cam. Regarding the recording lengths, the camera will record continuously in small segments (1,2, or 3 minutes). It will record these segments consecutively until the SD card is full. Then the oldest piece of footage will be deleted and the newest will be saved in it's place. This will continue looping and is called Continuous Overwriting. The Dash Cam does this automatically to allow for more footage to be recorded and the old, unnecessary footage to be deleted without manual intervention. However Protected footage is not overwritten in the same way. These can fill the card and reduce the quantity of normal footage saved on your SD card.

You can see both front (above) and rear footage (below) that was recorded by the Nextbase 512GW and GWRC at the same time. The footage is very dark when driving into the sun in the morning, which makes it tough to recommend in some ways. Although, when it isn't so bright (when driving through the village in the above video), the footage is a bit lighter and you can see details like reg plates. The 512-G signals a new generation of dash cam. We’ve listened to consumers who noted that crystal clear image quality on an in car camera is vital. Having added a host of new features to ensure that the 512-G stands head and shoulders above others in the market, we believe the 512-G will be the best dash cam on the market for some time to come. “Glare and reflection can result in poor and distorted footage no matter how good your dash cam. But the polarising filter in the 512-G completely eradicates this problem completely – the first, and only dash cam in world to do so.”Remove the 4 small cross-head screws from the corners of the circuit board (keep separately from the above screws, they are different.) The dash cam itself is smaller and more discreet than the 512GW, too, 35% smaller in fact. The adhesive mount is much smaller than the suction one though, so that's something to bear in mind if you're conscious of how much space the dash cam will take up on your windscreen. How much better if you just plugged it all in, answered the "where do you want PiP to appear" and then got on with fastening seat belt etc knowing the unit would always start recording without further intervention. The front cam is attached via a suction mount, while the rear camera is attached the rear windscreen via adhesive mount - which means it shouldn't ever fall off even if you slam your boot door hard. However, the mount is very, very adhesive so make sure you get it in the right place first time because it's very difficult to remove. When you set up the front dash cam, it'll ask what position it's placed (top left, top right etc) too. When it detects the rear camera is plugged in at power on then it asks where you would like the PiP to appear which is ok, but then it enters fault mode in displaying a yellow PiP frame with no content. Power off/on is then required before the unit puts content in the frame - this is clearly a bug. It is a software fault when all that is required to cure it is to restart the software. Ok - off/on is all that's needed but the unit takes 3 to 4 seconds to go into power down mode and another 3 to 4 seconds to power up and perform as expected.

There are plenty of settings to adjust - including resolution, duration of recording (1, 2 or 3 minutes) and exposure, as well as switching audio recording on and off or setting a number plate for your vehicle. Things like Parking Mode - which records for a short period of time when the car is parked if it the G sensor detects an incident - time stamp and speed stamp can be switched on and off too. Navigating through the various settings menus is simple since everything on-screen is clearly labelled. There are plenty of things to adjust, including settings for the frame rate and resolution, as well as switching audio recording on and off or setting a number plate for the camera car.

How To Setup Intelligent Parking Mode

However, with the rear cam attached, the footage quality drops from 1440P to 1080P, which means footage can become very dark (as you'll see in the video lower down in this review. You can also rotate the display, should you want to mount the camera upside down – although the menu buttons stay where they are. The G-sensor can be set at High, Medium or Low, or turned off. This will detect sharp motion, indicating an incident, and will mark the current video recording as an emergency, which will guard it against being overwritten. The rear of the 512GW is dominated by a 3-inch LCD screen with touch-sensitive buttons on either end. There’s a clearly marked menu button, which loads the video settings. You can change the resolution, but also vary the exposure between +2 and -2 in five steps. If the Dash Cam does not appear as a drive on your PC, please press the reset button on the underside of your Dash Cam and try all the USB ports on your computer. It is essential that you format your SD card every 2-3 weeks to delete the Protected filed and free up space on your memory card for new recordings.
