Description

It does this while simultaneously repelling rain from the outer surface. The result of this performance is that your tent stays dry on both the inside and the outside. This creates a more comfortable environment when camping. You also have the option to use wax to seal the waterproofing quality into your fabric. This is a more labor-intensive option than using waterproofing sprays, but if you have the items, you can use this method instead. You’ll first need to melt the paraffin wax using a double boiler while your fabric goes into the dryer to warm it up. This makes applying the wax easier. Be sure to pay close attention to seams as they are quite often the weak spot for leaks or stitching breaks.

While people are sometimes intimidated by the products, assuming they can potentially ruin a much-loved item or that the process of application is more complicated than it is, Heidi Allen, vice president of marketing at Nikwax, is working to spread the gospel of re-waterproofing. I actually think this is a little unfair. Both products are extremely high quality and manufactured by experts. Much like the video below, I don’t think there’s a huge difference between them when it comes to actual waterproofing. Whether you decide to use a waterproofing spray, wash-in, or wax comes down to the product you’re waterproofing and your personal preference. Firstly, spray a small section of the canvas of your EZ up canopy. Apply by holding the can 8 inches away from the product and use a gentle sweeping motion to apply evenly. The rest of this section will look specifically at Nikwax TX Direct vs Revivex Instant Waterproofing Spray. Both products are “durable water repellent” (DWR) sprays. Both are non-silicone and water-based. Both can be used on outerwear, tents, sleeping bags and footwear. Application: Spray vs Aerosol If you’re concerned about changes to an item’s color or texture, spot-testing on a small area is always a good idea. We tried the wash on a down blanket, which before testing, allowed water to slip through the outer shell immediately, leading to a few damp, chilly nights while camping, and we found the water resistance of that outer layer much improved after its wash and dry cycle. The blanket was nice and fluffy after testing, and there was no change to the color or texture of the exterior. It’s still not a fully waterproof item—it wasn’t designed to be—and we’ll do our best not to soak it intentionally, but now we're less worried about it accidentally getting a little wet. Only the Atsko/Sno-Seal spray products have done away with the use of this volatile mixture to power the aerosol applicator, using CO2 captured as a byproduct from other manufacturers. Another plus to this system is that less propellant is needed and more of the waterproofing product ends up in the can.

First, make sure that your boots are completely clean. This means removing the laces and using a brush to get rid of any dirt or grime. You can even soak the boots to remove any dirt caked on the bottom. Just let them dry before you start applying your waterproof spray. Fabric BootsThe perfect waterproofing product makes your gear feel like new—waterproof and breathable again, with no negative changes to the material. That’s precisely what Grangers Performance Repel Plus, a non-aerosol spray from the British brand, did for an older pair of rain pants that were wetting out. In fact, the waterproofing on these pants was better after applying this spray than it was before. Usually, you’ll want to put on a second coat after you let the fabric dry for about four hours. After that dries, then you’ll be good to go and ready to test it out. With Wax As stated earlier, leather needs a more delicate treatment. It’s more valuable than the common materials found in outdoor gear—cotton, wool, and nylon—and requires a trusted system that won’t harm them. KIWI trusts their product to deliver water-repellency without any side-effects.

Because breathability is maintained after application, the Scotchgard is suitable for outdoor furniture and accessories like boat and car covers. It’s uncommon to find a waterproofing spray that doesn’t compromise the comfort and elasticity of a material. But this particular spray avoids both these things and will leave you satisfied. In Summary Waxes and wash-ins can be applied indoors—a benefit if it’s raining or snowing or if you don’t have an outdoor workspace where you can apply the products. Wash-ins are easy; they only require using your washing machine, and some can even be done by hand-washing. Wash-ins are especially popular for down items since the waterproofing product is also meant for the feathers inside the item and the outer layer. When you’re using a waterproof spray, first start by laying out your fabric over a piece of cardboard. Lightly spray the surface of the fabric while holding the can about 6 inches away. Go over the entire piece of fabric without applying it too heavily. So, the fabric should not be completely saturated with spray. The first thing we noted while applying the product to a pair of leather boots, which is simple with the included cotton terry applicator pad, is how soft and shiny it makes the leather. And there’s no chemical smell; this product can be applied inside since there are no fumes to worry about, and it doesn’t require spraying. After allowing the leather to dry, our tester buffed off any extra protectant left on the surface and let it sit overnight. Revivex comes in an aerosol can whereas Nikwax prefers a trigger spray mechanism. Each to their own (and I can absolutely see how an aerosol is marginally more convenient) but I definitely prefer the manual trigger spray approach. I’m not keen on the extra resources required for an aerosol delivery (it seems wasteful and, of course, you have to pay for it). And I’ve always found aerosols seem to run out of propellant before the can is empty.

Our tester especially liked that this spray had no detectable smell, and it came at an affordable cost—it really was flawless. You can buy an eco-friendly refill pouch of Performance Repel Plus for your sprayer instead of an entirely new bottle when you run out. Grangers also sells a wash-in version of this spray if you prefer that waterproofing method. This is an aerosol product, and you must take extra care not to breathe in the vapors when spraying (the bottle even recommends you don’t allow children or pets near the spray or wet items). There is also a strong chemical smell. We tested in a well-ventilated breezeway and still had to step away for a few minutes after spraying the boots each time. The scent did linger longer than on some of the other products—even after the recommended 24 to 48 hours of drying time—but it eventually faded with time and wear. Especially if you are applying to a tent, for example, you’ll want to allow some time for the item to air out before use. The company has introduced a variety of innovations since its founding in 1977. Among other things, it was the first company to develop a non-softening wax for leather boots, which is still a popular product. As discussed earlier, a common trend was for waterproofing agents to make fabrics very hard—Nikwax changed all that with their patented formula. The silicone used in the KIWI Camp Dry is treated to ensure it remains odor-free. There’s no point in using waterproof gear when it has an unpleasant odor. This usually becomes irritating to those around, and sacrificing the comfort of others for performance isn’t necessary, especially when there are such good quality products on the market.

We found that water rolled right off the treated boots and purse when testing—but do note your item won’t be fully waterproof, as nature intended—and another application is necessary after several uses.

Also, this is probably one to avoid if you are looking to re-proof a white garment as there are several reports of discoloration. But regardless, you should always test out any new spray on a hidden area before you do a full application. In Summary… You should avoid using silicone treatments on waterproof breathable (WPB) garments like Gore-Tex because they will destroy, rather than enhance, the waterproofing. If you want to re-proof a WPB garment then you should look at a product like Grangers Outdoor Gear Cleaner which is water-based and excellent for Gore-Tex. Once treated, the fabric was allowed to dry for 48 hours and then exposed to water to see how they performed. Water Based Products Silicone based products have been on the market for years and when applied they offer some of the most durable water repellent surfaces. This has been proven in previous tests done by me on tents. Nikwax worked well, but had to be reapplied each season whereas the Atsko/Sno-Seal Silicone Water Guard continued to bead up water well into a second season.
