But the news is slightly more mixed when it comes to the A7 IV's card slots. Unlike the Sony A7 III, it does now have a CFexpress Type A slot. These newer cards give you write speeds of up to 700MB/s, which effectively gives you an unlimited buffer during continuously shooting. Is it as good as Canon’s Dual Pixel AF? Well, it’s different. For video, specifically, Sony gives you beautifully granular control over your focus speeds. You really can get that pan-focus effect with autofocus by touching the display when you slow down the focus speed, and it works very well, whether you’re focusing on a flower, an apple, a cat or indeed a human.

It has full-sensor readout and can shoot 4K video at up to 120p or full HD footage at up to 240p, with full-sensor readout no pixel-binning and with the hybrid autofocus system in action. The older A7R III has a more attractive price point however that does come with a few compromises. The A7R III has a reduced resolution compared to the A7R IVA, although at 44MP that is still no ill-store. There's also a helpful new Gamma Display Assist option that lets you see the scene with natural contrast even though you're shooting with an S-Log gamma setting.
Sony’s Alpha 7 (Sony a7) range has been one of the most exciting ongoing surprises in the camera world over the past few years. The 4K 30p video is oversampled from 7K using the full-frame, but 4K 60p is oversampled from 4.8K in Super 35 (APS-C) mode so there’s a 1.5x crop. Which Sony A7 camera should you choose?
But CFexpress Type A cards are also rarer and pricier than the Type B cards favored by Nikon, Canon and Panasonic, so you'll have to weigh up whether you really need them. Speedy UHS-II SD cards may well be enough for you, and A7 IV's second card slot does only support SD cards. Both of them resolve more detail than the original A7R which has a 36.4Mp sensor, but they can’t match the A7R IV or A7R V.
However, Sony hasn’t given the A7C the A7S III’s revised menu structure or its excellent touch-control. Also as a 0.39-inch type, A7C’s viewfinder is also pretty small for a full-frame camera.
The Sony A7 first hit the scene five years ago, and it's STILL on sale. But is this first-generation Alpha still worth buying?
Sony has improved the handling of each successive model. Consequently, the A7R V’s handling is significantly better than the A7R’s and quite a bit better than the A7R IV’s. Sony’s most recent camera feature a touch-screen, but Sony only made full use of it with the A7R V. With the A7R IV and A7R III, it’s only really useful for zooming in and out of images or setting the AF point. It may not be cheap, but it offers more than enough power and versatility to justify that price tag. Furthermore, not opening up the aperture means extended DOF, which means the camera has to search a wider range to detect focus. This becomes particularly egregious at smaller apertures. Say you want to ensure an erratically moving subject is absolutely in focus as it's running, and you're moving alongside it as well. You may wish to choose F8 for a higher hit rate. But the AF would be slowed due to DOF.
