About this deal

Armed with the new lens and the 26MP Fujifilm X-S10 body, we were ready for the rain, but in the event, the sun shone. What I should really do first is review the techniques for finding hyperfocal distance and carry a chart (or an app for my phone) with me when I'm doing landscapes. Honestly, the only thing I don't really like is how the lens looks with the shiny chrome front, but that's subjective. It also feels like there is some dust particles in the mechanism which makes the change not totally smooth as in the Discover copy. I find that a legacy lens with adaptor puts the aperture and focus rings exactly under my left hand fingers - so easier to use in practice.

is as good at the edges as the Fuji lenses ( it's a retrofocus design), the others have problems in the corners until stopped down, although they have other characteristics that some find attractive. The packaging reflects the boutique feel, with an upmarket Western design not unlike Fuji's own silky black boxes. I haven't really "tested" the bokeh, mainly because that's pretty low on my considerations in lens performance, but what I've seen through the finder has been smooth, with the 12 blade aperture providing those round blobs so many people adore, even when this lens is wide open. I was expecting a lens that was a it soft with plenty of CA but it doesn't look like that is the case. This setting switches control of the aperture to the camera, although in terms of ergonomics in this instance changing the aperture on the lens seems the most efficient way of working.

Because there’s no electronic connection between camera and the lens, camera can’t actually detect that lens has been placed into the mount. Eyeballing exposure with the EVF or LCD (aided at times by the histogram) is something I will be refining along with focusing. Visit our Competitions Forum, where you'll find our monthly competition and other external competitions to enter. From what I can see in tests, the Samyang 12 and 21 are the nearest to Fuji standards of sharpness, but they have had reported problems with quality control, and also seem to have focus scale and alignment problems occasionally. As a reportage/street/travel lens it proves itself to be one of the most useful focal lengths and this is clinched with the inclusion of the fast f/1. I agree that ideally all reviews should be from the same camera body and this should be as high resolution as possible, but unfortunately that isn't practical. When I get what I want in focus it is easy to rotate the ring slightly by accident, like when removing hand from the lens or even sneezing. size - well this is where the 7-artisans wins - but, for manual control with a viewfinder the 7-artisans puts the control rings very close to the camera body.

I'm still trying to decide whether focus peaking is the best way to go or just eyeball it when focusing (mainly because I have used peaking so little). The kit lens from either Lumix or Zuiko is excellent at wide to mid range - it only falls off in resolution near the 40mm zone. I can't see why manufacturers can't produce an accurate focus scale, its not rocket science, what do they think the scale is for! These projects don't need AF anyway, and the slower approach this lens requires is part of the "method" involved in the work. I received my lens on the 21st of this month when I watched the solar eclipse from my front walkway :-).Ultimately though, these sorts of comparisons are only approximate guidelines and the APS-C format has a look and strengths all of its own. It's easy to draw conclusions about the lower-resolution models from the A7R4's measurement results. Out of focus details are always attractive, with none of the background busyness of some lenses and an almost Leica-esque feel to contrast and definition. I love the compactness, balance on the camera and different feel to the images compared to the Fuji lenses.
