I really liked reading about Fenella and Oswald but surprisingly, I enjoyed the other parts of this book too. It was a little bit OTT how mean he was to the h and the ending only made a small inroads in our understanding of why he was such a jerk.

Vawdrey Brothers Series by Alice Coldbreath - Goodreads

She didn't know anything about the court life and intrigue, so she just fell into one bad situation after another! It must be a lot to take in… Indeed, it’s a hard day when a wife finds herself usurped from her husband’s favor. She was soft and kind but still very impressive with all the crap she had to put up with in the past.

Her interactions with the other ladies kept me an edge as I waited for what tidbit might be dropped regarding her husband or even gossip about herself. I read lots of historical romances but I thoroughly enjoy the creativity and the unique and interesting story lines. The third act didn’t really hit the spot for me (I would have preferred more angst, or maybe to skip the third act conflict completely because the audiobook felt a little long), but overall I highly enjoyed this book but that’s no surprise - I don’t think I’ve read an Alice Coldbreath book I didn’t like. While there were a lot of characters to remember, I found myself following each of their side stories fairly easily too.

She made some small noise of discomfort which he could well believe, as she was struggling to take him. This book is much longer than book one (which I had to re-read after seeing one of my favorite couples pop up in this novel), and the court intrigues are legion. He rolled onto his side taking her with him, so his weight was no longer pinning her to the pillows. Enid’s first marriage was a love-match so doubtless she would not understand a marriage of convenience. He forges some documents to show that they were actually married all these years (and not just betrothed) and so insta-wife.Her plan to confront Oswald who was her first betroth and try to get compensation took a lot of strength. Oswald who starts the union with a cool calculation soon finds himself full of possessiveness and lust. Thankfully, Oswald’s slick machinations to thwart the king’s dastardly plans (a sham marriage to the king’s prospective mistress), worked in giving Fen and Oswald’s second chance. Current court fashion dictated the necklines were worn very low and Fenella’s abundant figure would be spilling out of her dress. He had to steel himself against the impulse to prematurely spill his seed, as he throbbed deep within her.

Just wanna freak out about Alice Coldbreath : r/RomanceBooks

Fenella and Oswald were arranged to be married over a decade ago so when her husband wants a divorce to marry another, she turns to Oswald for help. This one was probably a bit longer than it needed to be, with many characters at court that I could have done without. Finally, she wasn't superficial and was able to see beyond someone's appearance and manners to the heart of a person. Never did Sabina Burrell imagine that foiling a plot against her sister would lead to her having to wed the arrogant Sir Jeffree de Crecy. Luckily, Alice Coldbreath has a way with taking a heretofore unfeeling man and turning him into the most romantic of husbands - after the nuptials are blessed.H has been celibate for over 10 years, he was too busy fighting in the war and working as the king's spymaster. She slid her hand down his upper arm in what she might have imagined was a comforting gesture, but he was far too over-stimulated for her touch. I truly hated the hero, his machinations, his personality and everything he said or did and although the heroine didn’t deserve to be treated the way she was, I can’t really muster much sympathy because she didn’t help herself at all.
