Not only does it have a great reading log layout, but it also has illustrations of classics to inspire you. My reading challenge journal includes pages to brainstorm and plan your challenge, as well as monthly pages to note your reading plans and stay on track. The diary incorporates child-friendly learning tools that integrate the important skills of reading, writing and comprehension. Some rare articles actually teach me something I can use and I open dedicated google spreadsheets where I summarize everything I learn.

It can help you stay focused on your goal and remember to work in those books that help meet your challenge.You can keep a hand-written reading journal using a notebook and a pen, or you can keep an electronic one on a computer or tablet. I am especially realizing this in 2020 as I read more nonfiction and more books for my antiracist education.

Like every tool we have at our disposal in the classroom, reading diaries will be what we make of them. Building in regular time for children to share with each other the books they have (and perhaps haven’t) enjoyed can create a buzz about books and help children to develop the literary language that is so useful as they move through school.

At their best, reading diaries can be a useful record of a child’s reading – a reliable means of communication between home and school.
