About this deal

The 'measure button' is too easy to inadvertently touch while measuring, thus stopping the measurement before time!

In recent years however, as digital mapping comes to the fore, they have very much fallen out of fashion. Set it according to your map scale and it measures your planned route in kilometers, miles or nautical miles. The distance calculator will then display a measurement of the length in feet, meters, miles and kilometers. Not completely though- in 2018 compass maker Silva introduced a map measurement scale on some of their compass lanyards and in 2022 map maker Harvey introduced boot and shoe laces with measuring scales. We are yet to see a package go missing but severe weather conditions or issues with an address can occur and play a part in a delay.

This compass is part of Silva’s Expedition series which has been the long-time global leader in compass accuracy, precision and durability.

Three Points of the Compass sets out on a winter wander from London to Birmingham along the Grand Union Canal. It is only recently that Three Points of the Compass stopped using a simple little map measure for route planning, though my fascination with them has never gone away. Instead we have outlined below a few of the main types of fit found in our ranges and how they compare. Beyond simple calipers, the earliest of map measurers, or opisometers, were very simple affairs indeed- little wheels on a threaded spindle that could be pushed along a line. From navigational essentials like compasses, map cases and map measurers, to torches and headtorches, right through to clothing essentials like gaiters, walking socks and headwear to keep you warm and dry.

The rangefinder allows you to quickly calculate the distance by measuring the distance between two points on the map. L'unico neo rispetto ad un curvimetro analogico è che ha una rotella un po' troppo ampia e quindi sentieri/confini/fiumi troppo arzigolati non li pesca perfettamente. The Suunto Tandem hand-held precision instrument is used all over the world by antenna installation technicians, surveyors, engineers, miners, architects and many others to measure bearings quickly, reliably and easily. But if I do use an analogue map measurer on my paper maps while planning, it forces me to look at the terrain, the twists and turns, the type of country being crossed- across bogs, through woods, traversing moorland, traipsing through the backstreets of towns. Now uncommon, opisometers are still available new today, but seldom applicable to map reading purposes. So I dismounted that spindle and measuring wheel and put small drop of glue inside of measuring wheel and than assemble it back. Thx for thouse whoever made this service - I use it for my jogging-for-distance practise and checking km done.

Each vertical strip map in the atlas showed compass orientation and distances in miles and furlongs. The card gauge is made of high quality metal and plastic, which is strong, wear-resistant, rainproof and durable. Chinese unbranded knock-offs of Silva products are inaccurate, cheaply made and often fail to work too quickly. For a tool with such a long history, it is perhaps a little surprising that they are still required and made today. Lack of waterproof carry case / pouch which seems an obvious requirement given it's marketed to hikers and sailors. Great way of working out routes over all sorts of terrains on Maps and excellent because it can cope with so many different scales. Gear talk: Pad-Pal, the world’s smallest and lightest electric pad inflator is getting smaller and lighter!
