About this deal

I started doing the things he said, particularly the things he said over and over, and I started winning games. A very modern table containing a comparison of the mobility of pieces in terms squares they could move to - which I had seen in one of Dan Heisman's books and thought it was a great invention.

Chernev's writing style is something I enjoy also and overall I would recommend this book to anyone who still commonly uses and reads Descriptive(English) Notation. Cooking apples will make your stomach ache if you eat them like dessert apples, but they look the same. Chernev was extremely well-read in chess literature, and shares insights of many grandmasters, as these insights are illustrated in the games in this book. Maybe it's too early in my chess career, but it's not like I remember any of the chess games that were reviewed. Chernev thoughtfully explains the decision-making process and contextual meaning behind each move as it’s made.giving advice from previous grand masters and teaching you how a grand-master thinks and what should be done to prevent mistakes. First, you can only truly understand what's written if you are actually recreating every move on a chessboard in front of your eyes. I think the book is very good in that sense and I haven't read even half of it yet so I'm hoping to learn a lot more. As a result, the games are absorbing and the lessons learned (at least in my case) tend to stick with the player.

The book itself is a great read and Chernev does well to explain each move without harping on about similar moves as the book progresses. This makes it easy to follow along and reap the rewards of his wisdom, assimilating what makes a bad move, a good move, or a winning move. A ideia é genial: "veja aqui os movimentos e A LÓGICA POR TRÁS DOS MOVIMENTOS de partidas que selecionamos".The author splits the games into three chapters, dealing with kingside attacks (16 games), queen's pawn openings (7 games), and other concepts (10 games).

Perhaps it isn't as timeless as it once appeared to me, but it should prove useful to any aspiring player wanting to better understand how to develop logical plans, moves, and thought processes in chess. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Even if you know what the symbols mean and even if you are actively following every move on a material chessboard, reading and comprehending statements like 'If (a long line of symbols), then (again a litany of symbols)' can get real frustrating real quick. Playing through these games and explanations offers insight into the power of the pieces and how to post them effectively. There is just one Queen's Indian and one Nimzo-Indian included; there are no games featuring the popular King's Indian, Grunfeld, or Benoni Defenses. This is no dry theoretical tome (it's a regular sized paperback) that makes you feel like you're back at university wishing you hadn't chosen this elective. This is a great book for a beginning player to start to build intuition for how to develop pieces and look for weaknesses, simply by talking through a bunch of games. It may not be everything you need - another book or two to cover tactics and endgames would also be helpful for a new player.

I know all the chess players here have already written love letters to this book, but I could not let that stop me from writing mine.I was thinking on studiying a basic ending book after this one, I find it more attractive than tactics.
