About this deal

The movie itself, at times, especially early on, has an undeniable amount of hiss present in the dialogue that just doesn’t seem to have been removed, if possible. A hard-hitting movie laced with moments of dark humour and brimming with social commentary, Full Metal Jacket is viewed as one of the all-time great war movies, with breakout performances for Modine and Vincent D’Onofrio, while R. Hartmann's performance and the recruits' reactions as convincing as possible, Matthew Modine, Vincent D'Onofrio, and the other actors playing recruits never met R.

NOTE: This review's screenshots were captured from the included Blu-ray, which is identical to the 2007 release. has already done an outstanding job, releasing the 4K versions of 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Shining, so it's no exception that Full Metal Jacket receives the same treatment. Definitely a must for 4K enthusiasts and maybe those who are weary of catalog titles… give this one a shot! The encounters between Hartman and his men – especially the overweight misfit, nicknamed Gomer Pyle is tough to watch. Ermey's performances were so faultless that Kubrick only needed two to three takes to get his scenes filmed, which was also extremely rare for a Kubrick film.

Over the course of this film, you’ll see how that war is hell just as the phrase goes and what it can do in terms of desensitizing the soldiers along the way. The new DTS-HD track has a tiny bit more weight to it than previous releases but is still front heavy for a good portion of the film. Once we hit Da Nang, again the palette appears to be fairly normal for Vietnam war movies, while HDR enjoys some more vibrant greens as well as the warmer climate, but it's only once the fires and flares erupts that we are really wowed by what this new 4K presentation can do, delivering some absolutely stunning vistas, bathed in gorgeous golden orange hues and fiery reds, cast upon the impenetrably black night sky.If you’re checking out this review, chances are you’re more interested in hearing about the 4K sheen and bonus content than merely us harping on about how great a film Full Metal Jacket is. Coming a year after Oliver Stone's Platoon, it similarly charted the exploits of a group of new recruits facing their baptism of fire, only here Kubrick was less interested in the horrors of war and more interested in exposing the horrors of what the US did to their own; fashioning hapless young men into killing machines by any means necessary. I remember being blown away by the first part because it was the best depiction of boot camp I'd seen on film. We get a nice examination of the project in a general way, though anecdotes about Kubrick serve as the show’s highlights. This new remaster shows off a great level of detail, with clear textures on sets and costumes, but the HDR (High Dynamic Range) grade is a bit of a mixed bag.
